“Rwanda-1994”

Comments by Darryl Eberhart, Editor of “Tackling the Tough Topics (TTT)”

Concerning the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, and

Concerning the outstanding films “Hotel Rwanda” and “Innocents Betrayed”

            My main reasons for writing this article are:

• (1) To bring to the readers’ attention some relatively unreported facts about the horrible genocide that occurred in the East Central African nation of Rwanda in 1994;
• (2) To promote the outstanding film “Hotel Rwanda” that was made in 2004; and,
• (3) To promote the outstanding documentary film “Innocents Betrayed” produced by the “Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO)” in 2003. (This film covers a number of genocides, and contains a short segment dealing with the Rwandan genocide.)

Per Webster’s New World Dictionary, Second College Edition (1974), Rwanda is: “[A] country in East Central Africa, east of Zaire [Ed. Note: now called the Democratic Republic of Congo]: formerly part of Ruanda-Urundi: 10,169 square miles; population 3,306,000; capital Kigali.”   I found more recent demographic information in The Scholastic Pocket World Atlas (2004), which gives the population of Rwanda as 8,163,000.  Up to one million people perished in 1994 when a so-called “civil war” broke out between the majority Hutu tribe and the minority Tutsi tribe.  In reality, much of this “civil war” was a carefully orchestrated genocide directed at the Tutsis, as well as against some moderate Hutus.  Much of the genocide was carried out by the Hutu Interahamwe [militia] and gangs of young Hutu thugs; however, government troops also played a significant role by helping to arm the Hutu militia.

            First, let’s cover some information about – and provided by – the film “Hotel Rwanda”:

            “Hotel Rwanda” is a 2 hour and 2 minute (122 minute) color film made in 2004 about the horrible genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994. It is based on the true story of a courageous five-star hotel manager named Paul Rusesabagina – a man who saved the lives of over 1200 Rwandan refugees who had found sanctuary in the Hotel des Milles Collines in Kigali (the capital city of Rwanda).

            Here is what the back cover of the DVD of this film states:

“Don Cheadle [who plays Paul Rusesabagina] gives ‘the performance of a lifetime’ (Los Angeles Times) in this ‘remarkable’ (Newsweek) and ‘profoundly affecting’ (Houston Chronicle) true story of one man’s brave stand against savagery during the 1994 Rwandan conflict.  Co-starring Sophie Okonedo [playing Paul’s wife Tatiana, who is a Tutsi] and Nick Nolte [a Canadian United Nations colonel], ‘Hotel Rwanda’ is ‘the kind of film that can change the world’ (Joel Siegel, ‘Good Morning America’).

            As his country descends into madness, five-star hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina (Cheadle) sets out to save his family.  But when he sees that the world will not intervene in the massacre of minority Tutsis, he finds the courage to open his hotel to over 1,200 refugees.  Now, with a rabid [Hutu] militia at the gates, he has only his wits and words to help keep them alive another hour…another day…”

            This film also contains “special features” (where we get to see and hear Paul Rusesabagina).  Here is some of the information presented in one of the special features:

            “In April of 1994, animosity between the two main ethnic groups in Rwanda (the Hutus and the Tutsis) erupted into a full-blown civil war.  Hutu extremists set out to exterminate the Tutsi people in a brutal massacre [Ed. Note: a vicious genocide].  Ultimately, nearly one million Rwandans were killed.”

            “When the genocide began, Paul Rusesabagina [who was a Hutu] was the assistant manager of the Hotel des Milles Collines in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda.  As the country dissolved into chaos, Paul used his resources and status at the hotel to save his family – as well as over 1200 Rwandan refugees.”

            “By staying behind [when he had the opportunity to leave] and risking his life, Paul [Rusesabagina] was able to save over 1200 Rwandan refugees at the Hotel des Milles Collines.”

            “Hotel Rwanda” not only tells the story of a vicious genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994, but it also tells the story of the general lack of concern for the carnage by the West (i.e., the USA and western Europe).  In fact, not only did the West fail to intervene to stop the carnage, but the United Nations basically sat on the sidelines, doing very little to prevent or halt the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of innocents.

            The rating on this film is “PG-13” due to “violence, disturbing images and brief strong language”.  Yet this is clearly not a film primarily full of scenes of slaughtered people.  Rather, it is the true story of great courage in the face of monstrous murderers, love of family, and deep concern for the welfare of other human beings.

            The DVD version of this film that I purchased is produced by Metro Goldwyn Mayer.  It is a United Artists film (by Director Terry George), presented in association with Lions Gate Entertainment.

            This editor of the TTT newsletter most highly recommends that all Americans view this film.  Why?  Because genocide can occur anywhere in the world – and because genocide has frequently occurred throughout the history of the world – and because our collective indifference to the slaughter of Black people, Asians, or anyone else “different” from the majority of Americans could come back to haunt us all!

            Now let’s briefly take a look at a great documentary film about genocide and how gun control ties into it:

            The “Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO)” produced an outstanding documentary film in 2003 that deals with a number of horrible genocides, and ties in a factor that many others fail to mention, i.e., GUN CONTROL.  Here are some excerpts from an informational sheet I typed up on this documentary film in July 2005:

            “GOVERNMENTS murdered 170 million of their own citizens during the 20^th century!  Much of the slaughter, rape, torture, and confiscation of property came after these governments had disarmed certain segments of their populations!  When powerful governments ‘go bad’, look out if you are not well armed and you happen to be the ‘target’ of their wrath!

            Government-sponsored genocide (often with the help of the ‘religious authorities’) has happened far too often in the history of the world!  Many Americans think that government-sponsored genocide could never occur here in America.  Well, it certainly could!  As the U.S. government pushes ‘gun control’ with vigor – and continues to build a high-tech Police State, the likelihood of government-sponsored genocide exponentially increases.  Bottom line: A disarmed population is easy to slaughter.  Americans must learn the truth about government’s ability and inclination to slaughter its own citizens when certain conditions arise. The outstanding 58-minute documentary film ‘Innocents Betrayed’, produced by Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (JPFO), is an outstanding ‘informational tool’ to use in alerting our family members, friends, and neighbors concerning this ‘tough topic’ [of the frequent correlation between gun control and genocide].  [It] is available in either VHS or DVD format.  It covers the government-sponsored genocides [that occurred in the 20^th century] in Germany, China, Cambodia, the Soviet Union, Guatemala, Uganda, Turkey, and Rwanda.  This documentary is professionally produced, and contains enough graphic evidence to convince anyone with an open mind that citizens should never give up their firearms to ‘government’.” (End of excerpts)

            The documentary film  “Innocents Betrayed” has a short segment on the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.  In this segment, which the film entitles “Rwanda-1994-The Hundred Days’ Genocide”, we are told that at the time of the genocide 90% of the population of Rwanda was from the Hutu tribe and 9% was from the Tutsi tribe.  The film also informs us of the following:

• People from the two tribes [Hutu and Tutsi] often intermarried.
• The State-controlled radio stations called for the extermination of the Tutsis.
• The Belgian authorities in the early 20^th century had given political authority to the Tutsi minority.  ((Note: The majority Hutus came to power much later in the 20^th century.))
• The Hutu-controlled government preached a campaign of hate prior to launching the genocide.  ((Note: Tutsis were often referred to as “cockroaches” in radio broadcasts.))
• Rwandan government troops participated with Hutu gangs of youth and the Hutu militia [the Interahamwe] in the genocide.
• Laws and poverty combined to keep the victims [mainly Tutsi, but also some “moderate” Hutu sympathizers] from getting firearms to defend themselves.
• All “offensive and concealable arms” were prohibited, and the Ministry of Defense kept a registry of those few people who were allowed to possess firearms.
• The Minister of Defense was also the chief organizer of the killing campaign.
• Government troops set up roadblocks to check the “national ID card” which identified Rwandans according to their tribal grouping – Hutu, Tutsi, [or Twa].  These roadblocks, and the national ID card, played a major role in facilitating the slaughter of thousands of Tutsis.
• Tutsis were slaughtered largely because they were not armed; they frequently had to resort to using stones against their murderers who had automatic weapons, machetes, etc.

            John Daniel, author of the excellent book The Grand Design Exposed, recently mailed me some information concerning the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.  Here are some of the key points from his article entitled “Innocent Blood”:

• “Rwanda, called the ‘Little Switzerland’ of Africa, is the most Catholicized nation on the continent of Africa.”
• “The ‘British Church Newspaper’, April 16, 2004, carried an article by a correspondent: ‘Genocide of the Tutsis – the Role of the Roman Catholic Church’.”
• Quoting frequently from the above article, John Daniel provides us with this information: “Events and media coverage of the 10^th anniversary of the Hutu massacres of 800,000 Tutsis in the spring of 1994 have strangely omitted the role of the institution largely responsible for the genocide – the Roman Catholic Church.  Its role may be compared to its role in supporting the Nazis in the 1930s.”
• “…German colonists arrived in Rwanda-Burundi in the 1870s to find a well ordered society.  The Tutsis were dominant cattle owners, and held power in the ‘central court’.  The Hutus were peasant farmers who could move into the Tutsi elite on merit, with the Hutu chiefs playing a significant role in the society.”
• “From the 1880s onward, Belgian Roman Catholic missionaries from the Vatican’s ‘White Fathers Order’ increased their influence in the area, and in the 1919 Versailles settlement after World War I, Rwanda became a League of Nations ‘Trust Territory’ under Belgian control.”
• “The [Roman Catholic]‘White Fathers [Order]’…developed a bizarre racist theory to explain the relatively well-ordered African society [in Rwanda]…[that] proclaimed that ‘civilized’ African societies emanated from an invasion of ‘Hamites’…  Rwandan history was effectively rewritten by Roman Catholic academics and Belgian colonial administrators.  The Tutsis were Hamites, descended from [Noah’s son] Ham, whilst the Hutus were of inferior stock and destined to be treated like Bantu serfs…”
• “Belgium ruled Rwanda more or less as a joint venture with the Roman Catholic Church.  Because of this only Tutsis were given responsibility in Rwanda.  Their power increased greatly while Hutu resentment grew.  This set the stage for the post-World War II Roman Catholic missionaries [who came from a different order of priests].”
• “In 1931 the Belgians and the Catholic Church installed a national leader selected for his compliance.  He promptly converted to Catholicism which sparked a national rush to the baptismal font that made Rwanda the most Catholicized country in Africa.”
• “In 1933-34 the Belgians conducted a census in order to issue ‘ethnic’ identity cards, which labeled every Rwandan as either Hutu (85%) or Tutsi (14%) or Twa (1%).”
• “The Catholic schools dominated the educational system.  Ethnicity became the defining feature of Rwandan existence. Every schoolchild was reared in the ‘doctrine of racial superiority and inferiority’.  The Tutsis were told: ‘You whip the Hutus or we will whip you.’  The favoritism of the [Roman Catholic] ‘White Fathers’ [Order] for the Tutsis would now whiplash back the other way, for the young [Roman Catholic] Flemish priests arriving after World War II took up the cause of the Hutus.”
• “After World War II the influence of the White Fathers Order diminished as a new wave of young Papal missionaries came from Belgian seminaries.  They brought with them ‘social justice’ [note: read Marxist] theories that were now being adopted by the Vatican to promote Roman Catholic influence in third world countries.  These mostly Flemish priests identified with the by-now oppressed Hutu majority, took up their cause, and gradually forced the Tutsis to relinquish their grip on the country.  One result was a Hutu uprising in 1959 which led to 10,000 Tutsis being killed and over 100,000 being driven abroad.”
• “The Flemish priests, calling for social revolution, sparked a national uprising of Hutus against the Tutsis, called ‘the wind of destruction’.”
• “…The Roman Catholic Church orchestrated calls for the Tutsis to be ‘sent back home’.  A notable event was the disgraceful letter sent in 1972 to the Archbishop by a group of eleven Hutu Roman Catholic priests and religious leaders, referring to the Tutsis as ‘cockroaches’ – a word used frequently by Hutu killers in 1994.”
• “Father Wenceslas, a priest in Rwanda, was charged in France in 1998 with ‘providing [Hutu] killers with lists of Tutsi refugees at his church, flushing refugees out of hiding to be killed, attending massacres without interfering, sabotaging UNAMIR’s efforts to evacuate refugees from the church’, and much more.”
• “A local priest, Father Thadée Rusingizandekwe, was described by survivors as one of the leaders of several [Hutu militia] attacks.”
• “[Catholic] Bishop of Gikongoro, Monsignor Augustin Misago, was often described as a ‘Hutu Power’ sympathizer, [and was] publicly accused of barring Tutsis from places of refuge, and telling ‘a group of ninety Tutsi schoolchildren, who were being held in preparation for slaughter, not to worry, because the police would protect them.  Three days later, the police helped to massacre eighty-two of the children’.”

((Note: State prosecutors were ‘afraid’ to go after high-ranking Catholic prelates like Monsignor Misago because of the tremendous power still wielded by the Vatican in Rwanda.  However, local Rwandan courts have charged some Catholic priests who participated in the genocide.))

• “Prosecutors say at least 2000 people were killed at the Nyange Church in western Rwanda when the [Catholic] parish ordered the church to be bulldozed on top of Tutsi refugees.”
• Robert Chesal wrote an article on September 14, 2005 describing how Catholic priest Father Theunis was charged with inciting genocide and spreading extremist propaganda…which “encouraged Hutus to take part in the killing of Tutsis…”
• BBC reported: “Sister Gertrude Mukangango [the mother superior of a convent] received a 14-year sentence for her role in the massacre of some 7000 people seeking refuge at her convent in southern Rwanda.  Sister Maria Kisito Mukabutera received a 12-year sentence… The two [Benedictine] nuns handed over thousands of people who had sought refuge in their convent.  They even supplied cans of petrol to the Hutu militias, who set fire to a garage sheltering some 400 refugees.” 

((Note: Testimony from one of the militia leaders clearly showed that both nuns willingly helped the militias – “they handed over innocent people without being threatened in any way…”))

            Could this genocide that occurred in Rwanda in 1994 have been more than just a case of “ethnic cleansing”?  Could this Rwandan genocide have been an exercise in “population control”, and more specifically, “population reduction”?

            As you can see from the information provided thus far, the Roman Catholic Church must bear a great portion of the responsibility for this genocide because two different orders of its priests had favored two different sides in Rwanda – one had favored the Tutsis, and other the Hutus.  This is not an unusual case.  It seems that many Roman Catholic priests throughout Latin America during the last century helped foment murder, mayhem, and revolution through their “social justice” (i.e., Marxist, Communist) teachings.  At the very same time there were other Catholic prelates who sided with the ruling power elite within the State.  Thus the Roman Catholic Church controlled both opposing sides, and took advantage of the chaos that always developed from the planned conflict.   The benefits of chaos to the Roman Catholic Church are:

• It helps to keep people poor – and often poorly educated – thus making it easier to control and manipulate them.
• During the resulting chaotic times that occur in revolution and war, the Church is able to “eliminate” any threats to its authority – or to the authority of the government that it is backing – or to “eliminate” any particular ethnic or religious group that it dislikes.

((NOTE: If you would like to get some insights into this religious-political control and manipulation of people, then I highly recommend that you rent and watch the movie “Romero”.  This movie stars Raul Julia as Archbishop Oscar Romero, and is the real life story of a courageous Roman Catholic priest who was assassinated in 1980 in El Salvador for taking a peaceful stand against oppression and injustice in that country.))

            The Jesuits, and the “social justice” [i.e., Marxist, Communist revolutionary] priests who come from other orders, have been responsible for many of the revolutions and wars during the last several centuries.  Please carefully consider the following quotations:

GENOCIDE COULD HAPPEN HERE IN AMERICA – we absolutely must get informed about this topic!  And here’s something to think about: Could the powers “behind the scenes” be fomenting a “race war” in the American Southwest right now?  Is this why all this illegal immigration is ALLOWED to flow across our southern border?  Is this why the rich white elite is funding extremist Hispanic groups?  Who would benefit from the “chaos” that would occur during such a scenario?  Who would be targeted for “elimination”?

And – the Vatican, her Jesuits, and her “social justice” [i.e., Marxist revolutionary] priests (who so often foment war and revolution) must be exposed!
