1. Food shortages loom as wheat crop shrinks and prices rise
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/natural_resources/article3423734.ece
THE world is only ten weeks away from running out of wheat
supplies after stocks fell to their lowest levels for 50 years.
The crisis has pushed prices to an all-time high and could lead to
further hikes in the price of bread, beer, biscuits and other basic
foods.
It could also exacerbate serious food shortages in developing
countries especially in Africa.
The crisis comes after two successive years of disastrous wheat
harvests, which saw production fall from 624m to 600m tonnes, according
to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
Experts blame climate change as heatwaves caused a slump in
harvests last year in eastern Europe, Canada, Morocco and Australia, all
big wheat producers.
Booming populations and a switch to a meat-rich diet in the
developing world also mean that about 110m tons of the world's annual
wheat crop is being diverted to feed livestock.....
2. Video Link on Wheat going up in price 50% since the first of
2008. ( that's less than 2 months )
Some very serious sobering information here. I know we have had 6
prices increases in less that 6 months.

3. Wheat shortages hit poultry prices.(meat & fish) (Report)(Brief
article)

A global shortage of wheat is forcing the price of poultry up,
producers have warned. South west poultry producer Lloyd Maunder
predicted that the retail price of a whole 1.5kg corn-fed chicken would
go up by 20p--equivalent to 4%--as the soaring cost of wheat made the
cost of chicken feed more expensive.
4. World wheat shortages loom - prices soar
http://postmanpatel.blogspot.com/2006/11/world-wheat-shortages-loom-prices-soar.html
Australia forecast the smallest wheat crop in 12 years last week
as exceptionally dry, warm weather, especially during the critical month
of September, shriveled wheat in most growing regions of Australia and
the price jumped to US$5.085 a bushel on the Chicago Board.
Droughts in the Ukraine and mid west U.S. have sent the world's
most planted cereal crop price soar by 50 % this year. U.S. production
dropped by 14 % because of the drought in the Midwest this year.In
Texas, wheat production is the lowest since 1971, while acres harvested
for grain are the lowest since 1925. Oklahoma's production is the lowest
since 1971, and acres harvested for grain are the lowest since 1955.
Market watchers forecast US$7.50 a bushel as World inventories had
fallen 43 % by June to 119.3 million tons, the lowest since 1982,
according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Oct. 16th.
Wheat prices are being driven by prospects for a 2006-07 world
wheat crop that is 5.4 percent smaller than last year's crop and 4.8
percent less than projected consumption. United States wheat ending
stocks are projected to be the tightest since 1996 and world ending
stocks are projected to be the tightest since 1988......
Wheat harvests record prices on tight supplies
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/food/2007-09-27-wheat_N.htm
WASHINGTON - Wheat prices soared to a record on futures markets
Thursday, propelled by tight world supplies and strong demand. Relief
could be awhile in coming.
Wheat for December delivery closed at $9.33 a bushel in Chicago,
more than double the price from a year ago. Drought in Australia and
poor crops in other nations helped drive U.S. and world supplies to the
lowest levels in decades. U.S. wheat stocks are pegged at 362 million
bushels in 2007-08, the tightest since 1973-74.
"The wheat-production problems are exceptional. You don't
usually have bad weather in as many different places around the
world," says Edward Allen, agricultural economist at the USDA's
Economic Research Service.
Major wheat producers Russia and the Ukraine face export
restrictions. In Italy, consumer groups staged a mini-boycott of bread
and pasta to protest prices.
The situation is contributing to a surge in U.S. food inflation
and a debate about whether the Agriculture Department should let farmers
plant on millions of acres set aside for conservation.......
5. Engineering's greatest challenge: Our survival
Panel puts 14 jobs on to-do list, ranging from clean water to
clean fusion
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23175788/
BOSTON - After a year of deliberation, an all-star team of
technologists on Friday laid out their list of the 21st century's top
engineering challenges - a list that lifts engineers out of their geeky
stereotypes and puts them at the forefront of change.
The Grand Challenges for Engineering call for countering global
warming, harnessing nuclear fusion, heading off terrorism, rebuilding
cities and reverse-engineering the brain. And those are just a few of
the 14 items on the to-do list......
