Maine school board approves contraceptives for middle schoolers
AP on One News Now
img91/3386/dtlahnt36jwczwwbrecm9hepv3.jpgPupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills

and patches at their student health center after the local school board
approved the proposal Wednesday evening.
The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School
the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception
available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state
Department of Health and Human Services.

Chairman John Coynie voted against it, saying he felt providing the
birth control was a parental responsibility. The other no vote came
from Ben Meiklejohn, who said the consent form does not clearly define
the services being offered.

Students treated at the centers must first get written parental
permission, but under state law such treatment is confidential, and
students decide for themselves whether to tell their parents about the
services they receive.
'Values Voters' to Gather With GOP Hopefuls

NPR
Conservative Christians from around the country will be meeting in
Washington tomorrow for the Family Research Council's second annual
Values Voter Summit.

All the major Republican presidential candidates will be attending.
Mike Heath, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine,
and Cathi Herrod, president of the Center for Arizona Policy, talk
about the issues that top their agenda and about the kind of candidate
they would support.

Heath says he's looking for a candidate who can compete with the
current Democratic front-runner, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton. "I'm
going to be looking for the candidate who touches my heart," Heath says.

Laus Deo
        By Mike Heath

img510/9872/washingtonmonumentmikebd8.jpg     Have
you ever heard the phrase Laus Deo?  It means "Praise be to God!"  It
is inscribed on the tip top of the Washington Monument, believe it or
not.
     I
awoke a 3:30 this morning in our nation's capital.  Enjoyed an early
morning of prayer and updating the website.  I forgot to mention in
yesterday's post that I listened to an interesting interview with
Richard Dawkins on the Washington Post's Book Review Podcast.  Dawkins
recently published a screed against God entitled, "The God Delusion."
The interview peaked my interest in the book.  I'll see if I can find
it at the library next time I'm over there.  Click here for a thought-provoking review of the book from a Christian perspective.
     I
enjoyed some interesting conversation with my colleagues last night
over dinner.  As I move toward the Values Voter Summit that starts
tomorrow (Friday) and the Presidential Straw Poll I think Mike Huckabee
is the Republican candidate to watch.  It would have been interesting
to see how all the candidates would handle this group of committed
Christians.  Unfortunately the Democrats decided not to attend.  They
have made numerous appearances at events promoting sexual
irresponsibility.  It is good to be among people committed to family,
faith and freedom.
