“Fifth Columns”

Handout #16 // February 8, 2006

Here are some facts about “Fifth Columns” that are generally not well known:

·        Webster’s New World Dictionary defines a “fifth column” as: “Any group of people who give aid and support to the enemy from within their own country.”  The expression came into being in the 1930s when one of Franco’s generals was besieging Madrid with four columns from the outer perimeter while claiming to have a “fifth column” inside the city.

·        During the early stages of World War II, many European nations were betrayed by a “fifth column” within their borders when Nazi or Fascist troops invaded their lands.

·        Author Avro Manhattan, in his book The Vatican Moscow Washington Alliance, states: “To talk about [Roman] Catholic ‘fifth columnists’ sounds discriminatory.  Yet, one generation ago, Catholic minorities helped to destroy democratic Europe.  This they did by cooperating with Hitler.  Again, who were gathered inside the ‘Trojan Horses’ to help Hitler topple the political and, yes, even the military structures of Belgium and France?  Once more we find individual [Roman] Catholic leaders or [Roman] Catholic groups intimately connected with the hierarchies and therefore, with the Vatican and Pope Pius XII.  In France, we meet a Papal knight, Pierre Laval; a Jesuit-trained general, Weygand; and another prominent Catholic, Marshal Petain.  If active Catholic minorities contributed to the disintegration of European democracy, an active Catholic minority could do the same in the United States.”

·        The French people were indeed betrayed by a “fifth column” of powerful Roman Catholic leaders within their country at the outset of World War II.  These French Roman Catholic leaders betrayed their own country, and made sure that Hitler’s Nazi troops initially received very little resistance when they set up a puppet government in France.

·        The people of Yugoslavia suffered an even worse fate when a “fifth column” of Roman Catholic leaders (some in the Yugoslav government and others in the Yugoslav Army) betrayed their country at the outset of World War II.  These Yugoslav Roman Catholic leaders helped Hitler’s Nazi forces set up a Fascist puppet regime in Croatia (then a province of Yugoslavia).  These Yugoslav Roman Catholics revealed the locations of Yugoslav Army units’ ammunition and military supplies to the enemy!  The results were devastating – a Church-State genocide was launched by the Roman Catholic Ustashi militia, frequently led by Roman Catholic clergy, against innocent Serb Orthodox Christian men, women, elderly, and children. 600,000 to one million innocent Serb Orthodox Christians were exterminated in this vicious religious genocide!

·        Might such a “fifth column” exist in America today?  There are many Roman Catholics from Opus Dei, the Knights of Malta, and the Knights of Columbus holding powerful positions in the U.S. government, U.S. military, banking, publishing, etc.  When America comes under total martial law in a 10-FEMA-regional Fascist Police State, where will the loyalties of these powerful American Roman Catholic leaders lie?  Will their primary loyalty be to the American people, our U.S. Constitution, and religious liberty – or will their primary loyalty be to the Vatican and/or the Jesuit Superior General?
