October 18
The only Pilgrim to have a portrait, Edward Winslow was born
this day, October 18, 1595.
As a young man he joined the Separatists, a persecuted Christian
group, and fled to Leyden, Holland, where he and William
Brewster printed illegal religious pamphlets distributed back in
England.
After twelve hard years, at the age of 25, Winslow departed with
101 Pilgrims to the New World.
In 1622, he cured Indian chief Massaoit of a dreadful sickness,
resulting in a peace which lasted over fifty years.
Three times Governor of the Plymouth Colony, he oversaw their
finances and repeatedly sailed to England for legal and business
purposes, bringing back the colony's first cattle.
For seventeen weeks Anglican Archbishop William Laud had him
jailed.
He returned to England, served in Oliver Cromwell’s army
during the English Civil War, and sailed as commissioner with
Admiral Sir William Penn, father of Pennsylvania’s founder, on
an expedition to capture the island of Hispaniola from Spain.
After defeat at Santo Domingo, he died of a fever on the way to
Jamaica, which Penn captured.
In Young’s Chronicles, Edward Winslow wrote of the Pilgrims:
"Drought and the like...moved not only every good man
privately to enter into examination with his own estate between
God and his conscience, and so to humiliation before Him, but
also to humble ourselves together before the Lord by fasting and
prayer."
