Lewis Cass was born this day, October 9, 1782. He fought in the War of 1812, being promoted to Brigadier-General.
He became the Governor of the Michigan Territory where he made treaties with the Indians, organized townships and built roads.
President Andrew Jackson appointed him Secretary of War.
A member of the Democrat Party, Lewis Cass served as a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State for President Buchanan and was the Democrat Party's Presidential Candidate in 1848.
After his death in 1866, the State of Michigan chose his statue to represent their State in the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall.
Lewis Cass stated:
"Independent of its connection with human destiny hereafter, the fate of republican government is indissolubly bound up with the fate of the Christian religion,
and a people who reject its holy faith will find themselves the slaves of their own evil passions and of arbitrary power."
