On this day, January 23, 1789, John Carroll founded Georgetown
University.
But who was John Carroll? He was a brother of U.S. Rep. Daniel
Carroll, who signed the U.S. Constitution and gave much of the
land where the Capitol is located.
He was a cousin of Senator Charles Carroll, the wealthiest man
in America and longest living signer of the Declaration.
John's nephew Robert Brent, was Washington, D.C.'s first mayor,
reappointed by Jefferson and Madison.
John Carroll was America's first Catholic bishop, founding the
nation's first Catholic seminary and parochial school system.
He convinced Elizabeth Seton to start a girls school in
Baltimore.
In 1776, the Continental Congress asked John Carroll to be on a
commission, with Ben Franklin, to enlist the aid of Canada in the
Revolution.
His influence caused four of the new thirteen State
Constitutions to allow Catholics absolute equality with other
citizens.
Bishop John Carroll wrote:
"Freedom and independence, acquired by...and cemented with
the mingled blood of Protestant and Catholic fellow-citizens,
should be equally enjoyed by all."
President Washington wrote to him in 1790:
"I presume that your fellow-citizens will not forget the
patriotic part which you took in their Revolution...or the
important assistance which they received from a nation in which
the Roman Catholic faith is professed."
